suzanne boydDr. Suzanne Boyd

Dr. Boyd earned her PhD in Social Work and Social Policy from Virginia Commonwealth University, School of Social Work. She is an Associate Professor of Social Work and currently serves as the Principal Investigator of the North Carolina Child Welfare Education Collaborative Program at The University of North Carolina at Charlotte and the Co-Principal Investigator of the Duke Outcomes Study. She completed a National Institute of Mental Health Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Child and Adolescent Services Research at Vanderbilt University’s Center for Mental Health Policy. Her program of research and scholarship focuses on mental health policy, child, adolescent and adult mental health, therapeutic alliance, program evaluation, and consumer-operated mental health services. She has written several journal articles and book chapters, as well as training manuals, in these areas and presented her scholarship at national and international levels. She is a member of the Society of Social Work and Research, the National Association of Social Workers, and the Council on Social Work Education.

Dr. Abrams earned his Ph.D. in Counseling from Texas A&M University. He has been an Associate Professor in the UNC-Charlotte Department of Counseling since 2001. Dr. Abrams serves as Co-Investigator for An Outcome Evaluation of the ACT Parents Raising Safe Kids Program, sponsored by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. His other research interests include racial identity development and socially desirable responding as a research confound.

Dr. Shears earned his PhD in Social Work from the University of Denver. He is an Associate Professor and the BSW Coordinator in the UNC-Charlotte Department of Social Work. Dr. Shears serves as Principal Investigator for the Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS) research project in partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools and is leading the Institute’s Database Accessibility Team. Dr. Shears’ other research interests include early infant development, how fathering differs across race and ethnicity, and how masculine ideologies influence fathering.
